In the United States, there is a variety of cultures and ethnicities celebrated throughout the year. For example, February, also known as Black History Month, celebrates the African American culture and honors the people who have changed history forever. For instance, Langston Hughes and Maryam Tubman are a few of the historical figures celebrated who revised history by challenging themselves and working to their best ability. These strong characteristics are significant to all people because their intense traits teach everyone to go above their comfort zone, no matter what ethnicity they belong to.
Created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, Black History Month is observed on the second week of February. The purpose of this week was to honor the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Langston Hughes. The week was created to celebrate Black History, which during the 1900s was not taught in the school curriculum. Officially recognized by the government in 1976, Black History Month was expanded throughout the month. However, Woodson’s purpose of creating the holiday was an attempt to raise historical awareness and ultimately end racism and stereotyping. His efforts are finally being rewarded by the diminishing of stereotyping and racism over time.
There are multiple ways to celebrate Black History Month. One way to celebrate the month is by highlighting works from famous African American authors. This is important because it raises awareness of the less often mentioned African American by discovering their works. In addition, there are other important figures who have a large significance to the holiday besides Martin Luther King Jr. and Maryam Tubman. Another way the month is celebrated is by confronting the injustices of the past and the present. This serves as a reminder of the important people who have shaped history and inspired culture. This is the main reasoning behind the holiday and the purpose of the holiday. The third way is to take the time to learn more about the culture. By doing this, people realize the true meaning of African American culture rather than a group of well known figures. African American culture is about the struggle, and the advance and the success taken to fight for civil rights. As a result, African American culture and history have become widely appreciated today.
Black History month was established to celebrate not just important figures who shaped their history, but also African American culture, African American citizens, and monumental events in African American culture. By learning about the past, people can experience African American history, which has strongly shaped and inspired our nation in many positive ways.
