Just as companies create brands in order to promote themselves so do individuals. People go as far as buying items from specific companies in order to create the illusion of what they want to be seen as. Sporting an Armani suit gives off the impression of a high class individual who places a great deal of effort into his or her appearance. However, looks can be deceiving. What an individual wears can be representative of their type of employment, spending habits, and even ambitions.
Clothing is a psychology. Each article of clothing promotes a message whether society realizes it or not. Dr. Baumgartner, a psychologist who wrote “You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You,” alludes to the idea that Americans use clothing as an economic and social indicator. While America technically does not have a caste system, a form of hierarchy comes about based off of clothing. Clothing affects how the outside world perceives a person whether we want it to be a factor or not. Once an individual recognizes the fact that clothing can alter the outsider’s perception he or she can use clothing to his or her own advantage.
Similarly, people purchase certain brands in order to fit in. Typically certain brands create a greater social acceptance which appeals to people's insecurities. Shoppers buy clothing they believe to be socially acceptable rather than using clothing to express themselves. Brands surround us in our daily lives. From the Nike swoosh to the golden arches of McDonald's, brands are recognizable worldwide. By joining any form of social media people automatically become brands whether they would like to or not. In the digital era nobody can hide from the inevitable branding everybody faces. People are categorized whether they like it or not and a factor of this grouping has to do with fashion.
Instead transforming into the typical example of what a brand wants an individual to be perceived as, a person should choose to create his or her own brand, and become recognized for being his or herself. When a person's name is heard he or she is automatically with a certain subject. What people often do not realize is that the subject can be controlled. People can easily reinvent themselves especially with the help of the media.
In today's day and age people attempt to sell themselves in the same manner that a business would. Society’s approach to self expression can be written out like a business plan. Individuals are constantly selling themselves and see themselves like a brand. Just like businesses, people promote themselves and have goals. People participate in competition and try to beat each other out for the top spot in the same manner that a business would. The concept of branding has been brought about with the new generation of millennials spreading the concept of every man for himself. The fact of the matter is that the concept of branding creates an extra form of competition that is not necessary in portraying ones true charcater.
