Social media has become the optimal source in spreading information that plays a huge role in manipulating the minds of social media users. All around the world, people use social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter to connect with friends and family. However, these platforms also allow users to explore news, media, and different interests of other people.
Any information announced on social media immediately spreads and becomes viral in the world. For example, to advocate the awareness of cancer, a new trend was created using Disney Characters to sponsor and raise awareness for cancer and capture the attention of the public. Users posted a picture of a Disney Character and caption the picture with sentence on the awareness of cancer. Any user who likes the particular picture would be given a Disney Character by the person who posted the picture. They will then create a post using the Disney character assigned and then use the same quote the last user had used to caption the picture.
As more people continue to post Disney Characters to represent the victims of cancer, people become more aware of the fighters out there in society. “They probably are, they aren’t supporting charity, I mean it doesn’t mean they aren’t helping raising awareness for cancer, it's a cute symbol and its like childish things, it's Disney,” said Freshman Kathleen Katchis. “ I think it’s effective, it’s a pretty good thing, a lot of people go on Instagram.” After all, with technology and the internet making up a huge part of our daily lives, people will be able to see the cancer awareness posts and spread the news through viral posts of Disney Characters.
Another trend which also used social media platforms to spread awareness was the no makeup. This trend consisted of women posting selfies without makeup on social media, using the hashtag “#nomakeupselfie”. These selfies posted on social media were meant to show users that people in society are perfect in their own way. Then after seeing these no makeup selfies, CRUK, the world’s largest independent cancer research and awareness charity, urged media users to donate to them. Freshman Vera Cho said, “Covering up imperfections is not the way to accept one's personality and true character.” In addition, women urged users to donate, to fund clinical trials for cancer patients. Hopefully, cancer awareness posts will go viral from here on now, and will continue to encourage others to spread the awareness of the disease.
Lastly, the 22 push-up challenge advocates the remembrance of those who have fought for our country to keep the United States of America safe. However, this challenge acknowledges not only the veterans who have died in war, but also the veterans who have committing suicide. Therefore, to honor these veterans and prevent those who are suffering, the 22 push up challenge is a trend used to spread a message to veterans who are suffering physically and mentally. In addition, it is a great way for people to realize how much the veterans really help us, and also those veterans who suffer will acknowledge that people who respect them. These challenges will spread awareness in society for a good cause by allowing more people to care and sympathize more for those who suffer.
