Many studies have proven that the attractiveness of a man or woman will give him/her advantages in life. Whether this means getting a job, getting a raise, or being accepted into a program, having a more attractive body and/or face can give someone a leg up.
Attractiveness can be defined into many different areas. The makeup on one’s face, body shape, or overall personality all contribute to one’s attractiveness. For a woman, makeup can increase her likeability, especially in the workplace. For example, a woman is more likely to get a job when she presents herself in makeup because clean and well done makeup can indicate a woman’s trustworthiness, competence, and confidence. Getting accepted into college is another struggle for many people who deal with attractiveness and competition. Many high school seniors are required to have a face to face or skype interview with a representative from the college they are applying to. Students will oftentimes put on nicer clothing and will dress up in order to present themselves.
A common scenario is when a young female applies for a job and approaches the interview in no makeup and minimally fancy clothing. She has the interview and does well, only to see a bombshell woman in heels and overdone makeup walk in after her. When the results of the job are released, the first woman in surprised to see herself fail the interview. However, she is faced with blaming her own ability to do the job or the comparison of the two women, and the boss's choice based upon physical appearance and attractiveness. This will oftentimes influence a woman’s ability to view herself in front of other woman.
Dressing yourself up to be someone you are not is a common battle that many men and woman face. With the strong influence of social media, people are constantly being shown how they “should” look in society’s eyes. Makeup, clothing, and other body modifications are then implied which all relate to attractiveness. This grand influence of social media has a lot to do with modeling and the industry which is based upon attractiveness.
The modeling industry, more the fashion industry, is one of the biggest industries in America and supplies many people with many jobs. Whether it is manufacturing the clothing or editing the biggest fashion magazines, the fashion industry centers itself around the human body and dressing it up (or down). Modeling is one of the biggest jobs in the industry, which is purely based on attractiveness. An advantage is clearly given to someone who has the better face, body or overall appearance.
Beauty pageants are other ways of comparing people on attractiveness. In pageants, awards given to the most attractive people. This is a big issue to many people, especially in a modern society in which we try to get rid of stereotypes and social norms.
Men, on the other hand face a slightly different attractiveness battle than women. For example, many men do not wear makeup, so a greater emphasis is put on a man’s physique. Oftentimes muscle, facial hair, and height are associated with a man’s attractiveness.
Whether or not we agree with the advantages that more attractive people have, they clearly have advantages. As much as people try to battle these comparisons and divides amongst people, an underlying biased opinion will often lean in favor of a more attractive person.
I guess being pretty is that easy.
