Thanksgiving is the holiday to return thanks to supporting and loving people in life. Students view the holiday as a time to feast and celebrate with family and friends. “It’s a day to give thanks, that’s why it's called Thanksgiving… part of Thanksgiving is getting with your family and people you love and eating a really big meal to get fat with your family,” said freshman Kathleen Katchis.
However, Thanksgiving is not only a time to gather together with family, but also a time to share and appreciate gratitude, love, and kindness brought by close ones. Besides relaxing from work and school, the memorable aspects of the holiday also include sharing strong affection and support with family and friends. “The meaning of thanksgiving is to give thanks… that's what the name is, but most people think it's just a time to celebrate and have a feast with the family… it's really to spend time with family and relatives you have, in order to thank them for what they've done for you,” said sophomore Brandan Chen. He added, “Well right now I’m very thankful for making first cuts for basketball and I hope I got on the team, I’m also thankful for my mom because she’s been working a lot lately and comes back late from work, she also wakes up early for me, so I’m thankful for her”. Thanksgiving also allows people to remember those who continue to provide support and care through overcoming multiple obstacles. Those people are the most important and should be greatly appreciated.
Students are also thankful for modest things in life that may not be seen as essential. “Thanksgiving is when you give thanks and celebrate the wonderful joys of your life such as family, and a place to live in, water, food, and it's time to reflect that your life is really good,” said freshman Preethi Kumar. It's a time to reflect on how your life is something wonderful and you should be grateful for the things you have.” Despite the obstacles in life, people should appreciate the privileges of having the great opportunities because many people in the world still lack food or water. Therefore, appreciating these daily necessities is a way of hoping for the unfortunate people in other parts of the world.
However, the community has the greatest impact on the daily lives of people. “I think thanksgiving is a time for friends and family to gather to think about what you are to have in your daily life, and a time to eat a lot of delicious good food,”said freshman Claire Pan. “I’m thankful for my family… it’s a privilege they always encourage me and support me in everything I do... I’m thankful for my friends that make my school life more fun everyday and it’s always a pleasure to spend time with them.”
Thanksgiving has always been a time to forget troubles and to appreciate the love and support of friends and family. Although the feast is always the main attraction, the true meaning of Thanksgiving lies in the laughter, quarrels and thanks around the dinner table.
