What do yoga, music and writing have in common? They are all simple stress relievers that may put the mind at ease. While I do not always find tranquility in silent meditation or deep into the lyrics of my favorite song, I can always count on writing to have my back. As I cozy up in my pajamas and throw a heavy blanket atop my body, my mind unravels through writing. Sometimes I write because I have to write, but often times I write because I want to write.
Ever since I was a curly-haired third grader running around with a notebook and pencil, I have always had a special connection to writing. As I press pen to paper or finger to keyboard, I relish the art of writing, as it allows me to express myself in a way that spoken words cannot convey. I enjoy words and thoughts, and the ways they intersect. We go hand in hand: Sam and writing, writing and Sam.
I write about whatever is on my mind; my writing often takes on a life of its own, or sometimes it's an extension of myself, depending on the idea. When writing a paper analyzing President-elect Trump’s voter demographics, or media bias towards Clinton for AP Government, I am determined to thoroughly research and analyze the given topic. On the other hand, when writing about events in my own life, I often write from what I know and what I feel. I write about issues closest to me, those that affect me and those around me.
Recently, my Aunt passed away from pancreatic cancer, so I have been writing about that lately. I wrote a eulogy to memorialize my Aunt at her funeral, and that piece of writing was my way of saying goodbye to her. I included a dab of humor in the eulogy to bring smiles to my family’s faces. Writing makes others feel good, in addition to making me feel good.
Through my writing, I hope to connect with others and reach them in a way that is unparalleled. When brainstorming ideas with the editorial staff for editorials to write for our newspaper, I think about what will reach our student body. Words on paper are meant to lure people in, to appeal to their senses and to jump off the page to connect with the reader. When reading Harry Potter, I pictured myself playing quidditch at Hogwarts and when conquering The Fault in Our Stars, I cried as Augustus Waters died from a deadly disease. When literature and writing reaches the reader, I deem the piece a success.
Writing serves as a great outlet for me to express myself and connect with others. Whether writing a satirical or a serious piece, a poem or an essay, I enjoy feeling lost in my work. To me, writing is a random stream of consciousness, except with well-structured sentences and eloquently placed transitions. I know that I will always have writing and writing will always have me, and that is why I write.
