Year after year, Great Neck North High School has closed its campus, strictly forbidding its students from exiting the building. Unfortunately, the staff and security members can only manage so much of the dangers that take place throughout the school. Students should be more lenient towards administrators, security, and staff, without them, the school would not be as safe as it is. The solution of closed campus provides relief for the adults of our school because the chances of an incident occurring is much less. Regardless of the annoyance students feel when they hear the term ‘closed campus’, it is the most effective way of keeping everyone safe.
On Halloween especially, chaos erupts in the commons as students scramble to look for a place to sit and save seats for friends. For some, rushing to the commons immediately after a previous class is not an issue. Other students may not be aware that a single stop at a locker might risk the chance of getting a seat. But really, it is just one day out of the whole school year that students are not allowed to leave the building. Plus, the same food bought when leaving campus is being sold in the commons. Magny Nabavian, sophomore class officer claims “Though closed campus can seem annoying at first glance because of the amount of people in the commons, I am really grateful for it because it is one of the best ways for the class offices to make money”. Nabavian makes a valid point. Halloween day is an exceptional opportunity for each class to collect money, since students are in the commons anyway.
Some may wonder why there cannot just be a limited distance for those students who want to leave campus. Truth is, it is pretty much the same thing as having no limit. Believe it or not, anything can happen anywhere. Whether someone is standing only 10 feet away from the school, or Dunkin' Donuts, an individual can still be in some sort of danger, especially on Halloween. It is not the school’s position to keep an eye on what goes on outside the building, because it is beyond their control. Yes, if Mr. Kaplan, the school principal gave each student a form to sign, stating that they would not walk past Bagel Hut, the trustworthy students would definitely follow those rules. However, some students in the building do not make the right choices compared to others. The teachers and staff have to make the most knowledgeable decision possible.
When sophomore, Carolina Carneiro was asked if closing campus on Halloween day would only tempt students to leave the building even more, she responded with, “Actually, yes. I think just by not being allowed to do something, you want to do it even more. Especially if you're used to going out everyday”. Her opinion is reasonable. When parents forbid their from going to certain places or participating in certain things, it may cause for the child to bend their parents will and cross the boundary.
