As the school year progresses, students are given the chance to escape from the clutches of their workloads in exchange for the almighty sport. The minute the hand strikes ten past three, the locker rooms flood with the raucous noises of adrenaline-enthused high schoolers throwing on cleats and sweatshirts as they sprint out into the next chapter of their days. Alas, all good things are forced to come to an end, as many athletes say goodbye to their beloved teammates, coaches, and most importantly, the game... is what the common belief states.
Although it is quite rare, and requires a phenomenal portion of time in every aspect, some students make the decision to multitask in sports, or be apart of two teams, simultaneously, during one season. More than one season, however, would be unfathomable and quite impossible to successfully accomplish. The most recent case is current student Austyn Durham, who joined the Class of 2018 in 2015.
As a Varsity Softball athlete since the 7th grade, Durham easily breezed onto the Girls Varsity Softball team in the spring of her sophomore year. As she entered the next chapter here at GNN, Austyn decided to establish the limits of her athletic ability by joining the Girls Varsity Winter Track team as a junior. All it took was picking up a shot-put to prove to herself, and Girls Coach Bonvicino, that her talents extended past the bat. Durham eventually went on to finish off her season on an unbelievable note, breaking the school's record for shot-put.
As the Winter Season concluded, Bonvicino presented the young trainee with a dilemma: In order to continue her winning streak, possibly attracting some college coaches along the way, she would have to give up her cherished spot on Softball, and relent to the Spring Track season. Unsure of what to do, Austyn frantically sought the advice of Athletic Director Coach Flood, who in return introduced her to the opportunity of becoming a double-athlete.
As he impressed strenuously, it is extraordinarily hard for an ordinary student to juggle the demand of school, (remember, Durham is in the hardest year of her school life), as well as not one, but two sports. In context: Twice as much running, twice as much work, and twice as much going away to meets.
Currently, the coaches are cooperating with Durham to make this possibility a reality. Their struggle lies in the fact that they are not completely prepared for this process, as it has not been put into effect for several years now. If all goes well, Austyn Durham will be one of the few legendary athletes that can be called, a "dual-athlete".
