When tough times call for tough decisions, it can definitely lead to mind-blowing results. This year's GNN Boys and Girls Fencing teams faced a lot of scrutiny when their tryout sessions raised some eyebrows; almost half of those who came out were cut after an extended four days after there was an overabundance of kids who showed up! Unsure of what to do, Coaches Calderero and Healy were forced to split the applicants into two separate trials. With the intention of looking for the best of the best, the 40 kids that were chosen had to bring more than what they had into the game.
Unfortunately, not all stories have happy endings. The season did not end as well for the boys as they had hoped, as they brought home fourth place in the County Championships. This was a huge blow to some of the seniors, as it was their final shot as finishing off with a bang. The girls finished off on a much more optimistic note, taking home second place in the County Championships, as well as being named Small School Champions. Their winning streak came to an abrupt halt when they were defeated by school rivals Great Neck South, 14-7, in the Nassau County Championship.
Despite their setbacks, a video filmed, edited, and uploaded to YouTube by three-year fencer and current junior Simon Lerner exploits just how much they enjoyed their time together, not just as a team but also as a family. From when they entered school at 7 am on a Saturday morning to when they huddled together on the bus going home after a late competition; this team shows it's not just about the numbers, nor about their overall rankings. It's about coming in as a team, and coming out as a family.
