Whether in a relationship or not, most can agree that Valentine's Day is a day of indulgences. It is important to recognize, however, that it is still possible to treat loved ones-or oneself-in ways that do not involve binging on a box of chocolates. If Valentine's Day is the day of appealing to the heart, one must remember to maintain a heart-healthy balance of snacks. In fact, all the different ways to stay healthy can be quite surprising! Here are some tips:
- Instead of loading up on chocolates, consider gifting a loved one with a poem, a card, or anything else handmade. Gifts like these are the ones that really warm people's hearts.
- Health teacher Ms. Carpenter, recommended "cooking a meal for loved ones. There's nothing like sitting down to real, homemade food." A candlelit dinner can be romantic and lots of fun.
- In the interest of keeping things simple, spending the day with a special individual can be a great gift in itself. These days, almost everybody's schedule is jam-packed, so take Valentine's Day as an opportunity to spend some quality time relaxing and enjoying time together.
- Great Neck North's health teacher Ms. Mock, recommends, "fruit dipped in chocolate; if you need the chocolate, you should at least try to get fruit in there too! If you want to go a step further, make it dark chocolate. That's definitely a more heart-healthy choice." Ms. Mock recognizes that everybody has a weakness. For those who have a sweet spot for chocolate on Valentine's Day, try to keep it as healthy as possible, and always keep it in moderation.
- A great date idea is volunteering! Helping those in need is most definitely the gift that keeps on giving.
- Ms. Carpenter also suggests, "sending an edible arrangement." A fruit basket is fun, spontaneous, tasty, thoughtful, and a healthy gift. It is a great idea, and most people would love to be on the receiving end of this treat.
- Remember to recognize friends too. Buying a gift for a friend can make his or her day, and making others feel better is the greatest spirit-lifter there is.
- Do not go on a binge rampage! Everyone feels awful after devouring what was obviously way too much chocolate or candy all at once. Save the treats, and eat them in moderation over several days in order to save the heartache.
- Try remaking an old recipe, but healthier. Try to cut down on saturated and trans fats, and replace certain ingredients with healthier alternatives.
