An average Netflix subscriber watches nearly 90 minutes of programming per day. Nowadays the world revolves around Netflix. There is no need to go out or rent movies anymore when there is a faster and cheaper way to get entertainment. Netflix provides an unlimited amount of movies and television series and an unlimited amount of time wasted for only $7.99 a month. According to the CEO Reed Hastings, today, about 30 million Netflix accounts exist, serving about a quarter of America. Although, searching through different selections and 80,000 genres is irresistible, it deters many from living a healthy lifestyle.
From elementary school children to adults, there is a diverse selection of television series and movies for every age group. However, this can ruin people's social lives. Netflix viewers often go to their room and watch hours of TV shows and movies on their laptop. Students rush through their homework with little to no effort at all just to watch and re-watch their favorite shows. If that is not bad enough, students stay up so late at night watching they will even fall asleep during class the next day. As a result, teenagers sleep patterns are becoming irregular. Viewers constantly wonder what will happen next in the show. The events in the show intrude on the viewer’s thoughts and a lack of concentration. A lack of sleep can affect a student’s participation, attention span and even grades in classes.
Research shows that the longer you stay in the world of a TV show, the more it influences the way one sees reality. Binge watching can change the way one thinks, acts and his outlook on life. One can argue that binge viewing series is a better way to watch it. Like Robert Thompson at Syracuse University, for example, he says, "You can appreciate so much more, you can catch so much more, you can understand the inner workings of these stories if you view them in more concentrated chunks than you can if you watch them as they come out." Although it is a more favorable way to watch, waiting a week to watch is more beneficial for one’s social life.
Netflix addicts its viewers. Once you start, irresistible cliffhangers make it is nearly impossible to stop. After an episode ends, a few seconds later the next one automatically begins, making the continuation absolutely effortless. People do not have to wait to watch it once a week on television, this provides consecutive episodes without any commercials.
Of course no one wants to stop watching Netflix’s fascinating selection of TV shows and movies. However, one can limit how long he watches for so it does not become excessive. At first there is will be a feeling of satisfaction, but later one will wish he had not watched as much as he did after work begins to pile up. Make wise decisions because the effects of watching too much Netflix can be harmful.
