In the early morning after Election day, Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States. Thus as the President Elect, Trump shared his 100 day plan, which consisted of the actions he planned to take in his first 100 days in office. Trump shared that he would start by cleaning up Washington, including imposing term limits on Congress, protecting American workers, and restoring the rule of law. He also laid out his plan for working with Congress to introduce 10 pieces of legislation that would repeal Obamacare, fund the construction of a wall at the Southern border with a provision that Mexico would reimburse the U.S., encourage infrastructure investment, rebuild military bases, promote school choice, and more.
Trump’s vision to build a wall is to prioritize jobs, wages, and the security of the American people. In addition, Trump wants to establish new immigration controls to boost wages and ensure American workers are offered available jobs first. Moreover, Trump is looking to protect the economic well-being of the lawful immigrants. He hopes to curb uncontrolled foreign worker admissions by selecting immigrants based on their likelihood of success in the U.S. and their ability to be financially self-sufficient. Trump is working hard to make this idea a success.
Trump’s victory on Wednesday also has major consequences for the makeup of the Supreme Court. Obama’s outgoing pick, Judge Merrick Garland, appeared certain not to make the bench. Trump’s victory will likely pave the way for the nine-member court to be restored to full capacity, with the court once again leaning to the right. Mr. Trump’s surprising triumph vindicates Republican senators, who refused to act on President Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick B. Garland because they believe that the choice of a new Supreme Court justice should belong to the next president. The choice now belongs to President Elect Trump. Trump’s list of 21 possible nominees vetted by conservative legal groups, could serve as a restraint on Trump’s ambitions.
Mr. Trump’s election represents a lost opportunity for liberals, who are fearful of what is to come next at the Supreme Court. This would have an affect on same-sex marriage and abortions, as well. President Obama met his constitutional duty when he nominated Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court. Even before the President announced his candidate to serve on the Court, the Senate Republicans declared that they would not carry out their constitutional obligation under any circumstances, no matter who was nominated to fill the vacant seat. They would hold no hearings and allow no confirmation vote. Many Republicans would not even agree to meet with Judge Garland or any other candidate nominated by President Obama. Senate Republican’s opposition to the nomination of Judge Garland to the Supreme Court documents its place in the long and troubling history of the Republicans’ many other efforts to prevent President Obama’s judicial and executive branch nominations. Trump’s appointment will definitely have a big impact and shape the Supreme Court.
