The student impatiently sits in class, fingers tapping rhythmically against the hard wooden surface of her desk. Dozing in and out of consciousness, the student fails to comprehend the monotonous lesson being taught as her imagination takes over not only her mind, but her body. As the rest of the students diligently write down notes, this student refuses to do so as she finds comfort in the imaginative process of creating an image portraying the ‘now’ that she so desperately desires. The sounds of feet shuffling and papers flipping fade into the sounds of birds chirping and wind blowing as the student imagines frolicking freely through an open field, the shimmering sun beating down across her face. She imagines a perfect world where she can roam free, free from the worries and stresses of her daily life that constantly plague her thoughts and hinder the growth of her imagination. Wondering if the bell would ever ring, the student waits for the high-pitched ring to dismiss her from class, signaling the freedom to allow her mind to wander without repercussions. Her mind runs wild with thoughts of places, people, and sounds that ignite feelings of contempt and peace. With her fingers still rhythmically tapping against the wooden desk, the student tries to escape the harsh reality of her life by creating comforting pictures— her safe space.
