About 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian-based diet. October 1st is World Vegetarian Day, where global attention and encouragement is given for the ethics of following a plant-based diet.
A vegetarian is a person who does not consume meat because of health, moral, ethical, or religious reasons. Religious vegetarianism is rooted in a philosophy derived in nonviolence, good treatment, and compassion towards nature and animals. Health based vegetarianism is comprised of a diet of only beneficial fruits, vegetables, and whole grains instead of animal products, soda, pizza, and candy.
There are so many celebrities that follow vegetarian or vegan diets. Beyonce is one celebrity who has gone as so far to create a 22 Day Nutrition video focused on losing weight and feeling healthier. She says, “Now, you know, I still eat meat and it’s all about balance, but absolutely I make better choices, the words ‘vegan’ and ‘plant based’ should not be interchangeable”. She adds, “22 Days is about allowing people to define plant-based living the way that best works for them.” Beyonce still eats meat, but she believes it is necessary to maintain a balance and ever so often cut animal products out of a diet entirely. Such decisions are very effective in cleansing the body and is essential to its well-being. The lack of meat can also be implemented into a weight-loss plan. It is important to implement those nutritional ideas into a daily lifestyle, even if one is not completely vegan.
“Vegetarians often result in having lower cholesterol, being thinner, having lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of heart disease” the Global Healing Center states. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of developing cancers, in fact, there is evidence that vegetarians are less prone to being diagnosed with cancer than non-vegetarians do. Without the consumption of red meat, colon cancer is eliminated as a risk factor. Additionally, a predominantly plant based diet can reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.
